Ever dealt with this? Here’s how to handle it.
The Situation:
A Reddit user shared this workplace frustration:
"My manager complained that I'm not friends with my coworkers on my performance review. I’m a software developer at a fintech, and I do my job well. I meet deadlines, deliver high-quality work, and have no issues with performance. But I hate being in the office—it’s distracting, and I don’t care for forced small talk. I just want to work in peace and go home."
"Because I don’t socialize much, coworkers gossip that I’m 'rude,' even though I’m just doing my job. My manager admitted that my work is ‘close to perfection’—but still docked my review score by 10% for not engaging with colleagues. Meanwhile, the people who play office politics get rewarded, even when I have to clean up their mistakes. Why does this matter more than actual performance? Why can’t I just work remotely and be left alone?"
The Reality:
You're not wrong to be frustrated. Many workplaces claim to value results, but in reality, "team cohesion" (even when unnecessary) can affect performance reviews. It’s unfair—but it’s how the game is played.
You have two realistic choices:
Minimal Effort, Maximum Benefit Approach
You don’t need to be best friends with coworkers, but small, strategic interactions can remove the perception that you're "hostile." Try:
✔️ Saying a quick “Hey, how’s it going?” when you arrive
✔️ Dropping a comment in meetings now and then
✔️ Acknowledging a coworker’s birthday or weekend plans with a simple nod
Think of it as optimizing for efficiency—just enough to keep complaints off your back.
Find a Fully Remote Job
If this level of forced interaction is unbearable, look for a remote-friendly company where results matter more than office politics. Your skills are clearly valuable, and plenty of fintech companies offer fully remote roles. If you’re already delivering top-notch work, why stay somewhere that penalizes you for not playing along?
The Takeaway:
Workplaces aren’t always fair, but knowing how to navigate the system—even with minimal effort—can make your life easier. Or, find a place where results actually matter.
