Side Hustle vs. Career Growth: Which One Should You Choose?
In 2004, Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia were struggling to pay rent in San Francisco. Instead of quitting their jobs, they started a small side hustle—renting out air mattresses in their apartment. That idea turned into Airbnb.
On the other hand, Sheryl Sandberg didn’t start a side hustle. She focused on climbing the corporate ladder, joining Google early and later becoming Facebook’s COO, where she played a pivotal role in its global success.
Two different choices. Both led to success.
So, how do you decide?
Go all in on your career if…
Your company offers real opportunities for growth—mentorship, leadership roles, and salary hikes.
You’re learning high-value skills like AI, leadership, or strategic decision-making.
You enjoy what you do and see a long-term future in it.
(Example: Satya Nadella stayed committed to Microsoft, continuously upskilling, and eventually became CEO, transforming the company’s cloud business.)
Start a side hustle if…
You have a passion outside of work that you want to explore.
You feel stuck in your current role and want to build an alternative path.
You want to test an idea with low risk before making it full-time.
(Example: Kevin Systrom worked at a tech startup by day and built a photo-sharing app on nights and weekends. That side project became Instagram, which Facebook later acquired for $1 billion.)
Both paths can lead to incredible success. The key is understanding what excites you more.
So, which path are you leaning toward?
